Franz Ferdinand was the archduke of Austria and a royal prince of Hungary and Bohemia. From 1889 until his assassination in 1914, was the presumptive heir to the Austrian throne. On Sunday, June 28, 1914, Franz and his wife were both assassinated by Gavrilo Princip. This event triggered several others that eventually led to the start of World War I.
